The Pomegranate is one of the most loved species of cultivated bonsai. It is native to Persia and many references to the Pomegranate can be found in ancient mythology and history, notably the Homeric Hymns and the Book of Exodus and is valued by many cultures for its beauty. The name Punica is from the Phoenicians who were active in broadening its cultivation, partly for religious reasons. The ancient city of Granada in Spain was renamed after the Pomegranate during the Moorish period. The Pomegranate is a fruit-bearing, deciduous tree. The leaves are glossy, narrow, and oblong. In the northern hemisphere the Pomegranate typically flowers in the summertime and the flowers are bright red.
